After a hard drive fail, how to use migration assistant wisely

how do I best utilize migration assistant to restore photos and videos after installing a new hard drive on my iMac?

Clean transfer to new Macbook Air I have a 9 year old Macbook Air and it's time for a new one. I have a Time Machine backup on an external hard drive. That HD also contains a Photos file. There was not enough room on the Mac to store photos so the old photos (going back to early 90's) are on the external drive. I am sure that there is a lot of "junk" in the background that I won't want to transfer to the new Macbook. How do I transfer all my programs, data, files, etc from the old to the new Mac without also transferring all the unneeded background stuff? Then I will also transfer SOME of the Photo files from the external drive to the new computer. I assume I just plug in & then drag to Macintosh HD in FInder?

transferring a few files from a 2009 iMac to new iMac. I would like to transfer a few photographs from an old 2009 iMac that are stored on an old 1.5 Terabyte external drive. What steps should I take to accomplish this? kathleen

But should I do everything at once or do one category at a time (user, apps, other files)? Do I need to restore the system and network?
