Google Maps not working in the background, keeps reseting Iphone 12

Hello! I got a new Iphone 12, and ever since, my google maps app doesn't work anymore. When I enter a route in, and exit the app for 1 minute for example, if I go back to the app, the route is gone. I have already tried to troubleshoot and currently, google maps is set to run "always" in the background. I never had this issue before as usually the google maps route would stay on your phone until you manually closed the app.

please help as I use this everyday, its a common problem with many people according to a google thread, but no one is offering a fix. Could this be a problem with my new Iphone?

To determine the best path to get this resolved, we'll want to complete the troubleshooting and isolation steps that you haven't already completed below. Please test and see if the behavior persists after each individual step.

Close and reopen the app using the steps in Close an app on your iPhone or iPod touch.
Restart your iPhone.
Update your iPhone or iPad.
Update the app using the steps in How to manually update apps on your Apple device.
Delete the app using Delete apps on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, then reinstall it using Redownload apps and games from Apple.
