Hello AlexJKent,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
We understand that you want to use Safari to watch BBC iPlayer but it becomes unresponsive. We are happy to help.
We’d like to have you do some isolating troubleshooting steps to help us isolate the cause further.
Let’s start by using the steps here to help resolve this since they're specific to the behavior you're experiencing: If Safari on Mac doesn't open a webpage or isn’t working as expected - Apple Support
If those steps don't help, then test in safe mode: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support
"Apple silicon
Intel processor
We’d also like to have you test in a new user account: Change Users & Groups settings on Mac - Apple Support
"Create a new user or group.
Click the New Account pop-up menu (you may be asked to enter your password), then choose a type of account.
See Add a user or group."
If you could also let us know if you experience this behavior when attempting to stream any other video or when using a different video platform, that can help us isolate the behavior further.
Let us know if you have further questions.
Take care.
