USB sticks not appearing after 13.2 update

Hello,

Just after the 13.2 update, all my USB sticks and most of my external hard disks don't appear in the finder (macbook pro 13" 2017 intel)

I can see them with the disk utility in the recovery mode.

It's a very annoying issue.

Have someone a workaround ?

Thank you.

Yann.

To my understanding this is not 3rd party. This is supplied by Apple. I have never in my life installed software I didn't need, especially something to access a USB stick or SSD.

Also, it was working perfectly fine for years now until 13.0 . In 13.1 it was super buggy, and in 13.2 it doesn't even see the devices.

I think you're very uninformed. If you looked at the forums linked from the others you'll see that it's a widespread issue in 13.2, and it was already there since the beta.

"New Issues

(⚠️Major Issue) USB Drives, SD Cards, and Discs may not be able to be read by the system"

So, it's not only me. And it's seemingly for many (but not all) the moment they install 13.2.

Found the solution here:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/macos-ventura-13-2-bug-fixes-changes-and-more.2378022/post-31917233

Digging a little further, at least on my system, the offending kext seems to be /Library/Extensions/jmPeripheralDevice.kext

Moved it aside with "sudo mv /Library/Extensions/jmPeripheralDevice.kext ~/". This makes the prompt to allow go away after reboot and drives remain mounted.

Regards.

I was on a long phone call 3 days ago with Apple's technical support, where they seemed clueless as to the specific problem, however the guy was very technical and we went through it together and got to the exact same conclusion.

After moving this extension (jmperipheraldevice.kext) all worked fine, but after 2-3 restarts it appeared again. It's quite unbelievable that apple released an update with such an issue.

I'm trying to figure a way now that I won't have to go every 5 minutes move the files. I'm thinking maybe finding something to replace this kext, so that it won't reappear again.

Anyone has any ideas?

Interesting that you would blame Apple for a third party extension’s misbehavior. That the extension reappears after being deleted implies that another third party app you installed is recreating it. Just a simple Google search of this kernel extension reveals it has been causing problems at least since 2018. J Micron makes drivers for various USB devices. Perhaps you installed the supplied software for a device you purchased when it didn’t actually need it.
