How to reply to a question on Apple Series 7 watch?

I cannot reply to a question on Apple Series 7 watch because the keyboard isn't shown. I recently received an update and am now unable to enter a reply except by a graphic notification and not a number. The keyboard on the watch for replying doesn't appear. I have turned the watch off and back on again.
