I may have discovered somthing

I know if you download Spotify on a device that supports it you can download it on an older device (you must download it on the account you are downloading on your older device) it automatically downloads an older version for you

but currently I don’t have acces to a newer device so I have to create a virtual machine for a macbook

Hello OldIOSguy,

The latest iOS version your iPod can support is iOS 12.5.7. You will not be able to update any higher than that, due to the device's age and hardware limitations. This iOS update is explained further here: About the security content of iOS 12.5.7 - Apple Support.

Follow this article for help with updating your iPod touch (6th generation): Update iOS on iPod touch - Apple Support.

When the iPod has been downloaded, you will be able to download any supported apps from the App Store, as explained here: Get apps in the App Store on iPod touch - Apple Support.

We hope this helps. Let us know if we can assist with anything else at all. Take care.

Have you tried downloading the version you find in the App Store? I think you should try.

I've just had a look and noticed an anomaly. The App Store tells me that the Spotify app version 8.8.5 will work on my 6th generation iPod Touch (running iOS 12.5.7 that I downloaded today). However, looking at the app in the store, if I tap on the line under the heading Compatibility, that says Works on this iPod to... I see a message that tells me that the app requires iOS 14.0. So I'm somewhat confused.

I've also tried this on a 6th gen Touch running iOS 12.5.6, with the same result.

I'm not familiar with the app, or with how the App Store handles older iPods such as the 6th gen model. I can only assume therefore, that the Store finds a compatible version for the specific model of iPod. Having said that, there may not be versions for models older than the 6th gen. I don't know.

I tried as you instructed and revived the same prompt as you described.

Well, minus one point to Apple straight away...

I tapped on the Get button (looking good so far) and was taken to a screen showing my account name and offering an install button to tap, so I did (okay, this is going well). I even received a Done button to confirm this (superb progress).

Then a panel pops up telling me I need iOS 14.0 or later for the app.

So minus a whole lot of brownie points which, (in case I need to explain it) is defined by Google's dictionary as an imaginary award given to someone who does good deeds or attempts to please.

Apple seem to have dropped the ball here.

All you can do now is (as bobjkln suggests) contact Spotify.
