Does anyone have issues with the Sandisk Extreme PRO 4TB with Venture 13.2?

So, there has been many reviews on Amazon and B&H reporting that the Sandisk Extreme PRO (E81) failing after mounting it for the first time.

Some are reporting that after formatting a brand new SSD, it would not mount again and there is no way to recover the SSD.

The failures were largely reported within this month and it seems to affect M1 Macs.

Planning to purchase the 4TB version but am wondering if this is a large scale problem for anyone else here.

I'm using the 2021 M1 Macbook Pro with Venture 13.2.

Pretty sure this is a firmware/software problem. I have the 4TB Extreme Pro. It worked fine with Monterey on my MBP M1, but after upgrading to Ventura, my Mac doesn't recognize that it's plugged in after the first time. If I plug the SSD into a Windows computer, it shows up without a problem. It doesn't seem to be a hardware issue. I'll probably revert to Monterey (again) until this gets worked out. Not sure if it's a SanDisk firmware issue or Apple MacOS issue, so who knows when/if it will be resolved. Very annoying though.

HOW TO RECOVER FILES ... Same problem here. Sandisk Extreme Pro 4TB, MacBook Pro M1 with Ventura 13.2.1. Worked fine for two weeks, then refused to be identified or mount. I could see the disk in Disk Utility but not its APSF format, and it would not mount.

On an older MBA running Monterrey I noted this error when trying to mount in Disk Utility: Could not mount “disk2s2”. (com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error -119930868.)

On a whim and based on this referral, I downloaded iBoySoft Data Recovery, and prior to paying it showed me recoverable files. I paid the $89 fee and am now recovering my files. iBoySoft apparently can restore Final Cut Pro libraries and folder structures so hopefully, this will be fairly painless from here on out.

I can't promise iBoySoft Data Recovery will work for you. My "backup" plan was to try to mount the drive on a PC using MacDrive or a similar to that can mount APSF drives in Windows – I had read that might work.

Oh, and I also just read that Western Digital is recalling unsold 4TB SDEP drives. The WD site is mostly offline right now, but you can rest assured that my warranty claim is going in ASAP.

if you go to the Western Digital web site on Sandisk Extreme PRO there are a lot of complaints like above. My solution is to return to the store and accept a refund and purchase a different HD model/brand. Easier than dealing with Sandisk and receiving a replacement that may or may not have the same design issue (and then you cannot return to where you purchased).

Update: I tried the "Always" Allow Accessories to Connect, but it didn't work for me. This affects now just my SanDisk SSD, but also my USB-C CFExpress card reader, which wouldn't show up at all with Ventura. Reinstalled Monterey and now everything works fine. Hopefully Apple fixes this issue soon, otherwise I have no path to run Ventura on my MacBook Pro 14" M1 Pro

Same Issue, SanDisk ExtremePRO with APFS formatting. Was not able to even use Disk Utility to reformat. I had to used Windows 11 on another computer to access and reformat the drive. Once I did this I was able to access the drive again (after it was wiped). If Disk Utility cannot access the drive on Mac OS but Windows 11 can then this seems to me to be an Apple issue.

There are continuous discussions on the abrupt failures of SanDisk Extreme SSD.

For Mac users, the most reported case is the SSD can't be mounted. It's mainly because of the file system issue. So, once the file system was repaired, data stored on the SSD can be saved back.

Here is an article that talks about the failures and how to protect data on the broken SSD.

This didn't work for me either - the drive will not mount on M1 MacBook Pro OR Intel iMac Pro, both running Ventura 13.2. The 'always' option doesn't even seem to be available on the Intel iMac Pro. So annoying, because the drive appears to work when initially formatted (tried both APFS and HFS+), but once unmounted, it will not mount again. This is the second SanDisk Extreme PRO 4TB I tried.

I have the same problem, I got my second Scandisk Extrem Pro 4TB after returning the first one because I thought it had an HW defect. The fact is the second act is the same. After partitioning and formatting, I can use it as a time machine backup, but after unmounting once the disk is no longer readable and loses its partition information.

I realized today had my sony camera also does not mount its USB drive. So this is a Ventura or Mac HW issue.

Very critical as backup and external devices are important.

I have this problem too: Tuesday Febraury 7h, 2023 I recieved the Extreme Pro 4TB (55AF E81), format it as GUID/APFS it worked fine a couple of days then died. Diskutil reported no partition. Then I formatted it again as GUID/HFS+, again, worked fine a day or so, then died, this time Diskutil reports de partition but cannot be mounted and can't be repaired by Diskutil (Exit code 8). I have a a Extreme 1TB (55AE E61) and is working without problems. My Ventura version is 13.1.

Even if Apple fixes this issue, it's a very delicate one, as we can not be assured that our data will be there next time macos updates.

Owner of M2 Pro 16inch and user of SDSSDE61-4T00 - Same problem. I changed the settings in "Allow accessories to connect" to always and it seemed to work for a short time. Then same problem again. So it certainly has something to do with this setting. I don't think the formatting is the issue... No problems on Windows with this drive... So Apple - FIX IT FAST! These drives are expensive and it is disappointing if we can't use these on the aparently most advanced system on this planet. Thanks

For time machine you don't need a fast drive as much as one that will hopefully last longer than your computer. The big name drives like LaCie and WD and others are safe choices, I use the Mercury Elite Pro from OWC, Macsales. Also Apple web site offers usb G-Drives that I use for time machine. Sorry for slow response, your note went to spam and was just noticed.
