While teaching on Zoom, my computer made a loud crackling sound and shut down. When it restarted I had this error message. I wanted to re-post this issue because it doesn't look like anyone has had a real solution. The only hopeful solution seems to be to not plug anything extra into the iMac. But that doesn't seem proven, yet. Any other thoughts? I have an appt at the genius bar later this week but if there is something I can do at home that would be easier. This Mac is just over 1 year old. Feeling disappointed. Thanks.

I took my iMac 2021 to the mother ship (aka the apple genius bar). The local genius, Sherwin, did a great job. He first checked the hardware by running a diagnostic. All the hardware tested fine.

Then he "connected my computer to the Host" which is his laptop that runs a special program that basically re-sets the Mac like new. He said with the M1 Chip, this re-set is essential.

He also told me there can be a problem using non apple approved "adapters" for USB to USB C. (which is what I was using). So, I replaced it with a new apple adapter.

And this is just an extra reminder, if you are not backing up your computer...go and do it now.

Hi julietterrrr,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. Is there any other symbols on your Mac display? If so, see if they match up to those mentioned in If your Mac doesn’t start up as expected and follow the corresponding section.

If not, try starting in safe mode next. Since safe mode prevents some software from loading, it can be a good way to isolate where an issue occurs. Start with the following guidance from How to use safe mode on your Mac which will help you access safe mode.

"Apple silicon

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window.
  3. Select your startup disk, then press and hold the Shift key while clicking “Continue in Safe Mode.”
  4. Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again."

Use your results to proceed with the article.

All the best.
