Connecting the stand alone magic keyboard to an ipad

I have a brand new (January 2023) stand alone magic keyboard that works perfectly with my Macbook but I can't connect it wirelessly to my ipad mini 6th generation, ios 16.3

I have spent over an hour talking to 2 support people who don't seem to know anything.

The instructions that come with the keyboard don't say anything about connecting to an ipad but the compatibility section on the apple website says it is compatible with my ipad.

I have tried everything including restarting the ipad, taking it out of the case, rotating it from portrait to landscape but it still will only connect with the usb cable. Once I disconnect the cable it doesn't work. It doesn' show up in the list o bluetooth devices on my ipad.
