Yubikey 5C Nano and IPhone

I have an iPhone 14 pro but no Mac. I would like to add a Yubikey 5C Nano (USB-C) security key to my Apple account. I tried purchasing a lightening to USB-C adapter but iPhone did not recognize it. Is there some other way to use this security key? Can I register it on the web using a PC?

For ONLY an iPhone you must use either NFC or Lightning.

The 5C unfortunately does not have NFC or Lightning.

Using an adaptor will inhibit the secure authentication operation due to the “Man in the Middle” risk.

For your 14 need to use either the Yubikey 5 (NFC) or the 5Ci (Lighting)

Apparently, you can not.

You are right, there is NO info anywhere on this, so what did you find out? I'm in the same boat, and as far as I know the Yubikey has to have NFC (with the ability to read and write) to be iPhone compatible, which would leave two options: the YubiKey 5C NFC and the YubiKey 5Ci NFC; HOWEVER there were a few Amazon reviewers stating the nano had successfully paired with their iPhone. The validity of that is questionable, though. If you have an update, please share! Thank you! 👐

USB-C is supposed to be orientation independent when inserting it, but that is not away true. I find when using my Yubikey 5C, it matters which orientation I plug it into the slot. So a simple test is to try and plug it in both ways and see if it works.

For those with a Mac, download and open the Yubikey Manager. When you plug the 5C in one way and you don't see it, simply pull it out and insert it the other orientation and it will see it (and vice versa).

Scouring the web can give insight into the technical details of this problem

Already did that. That’s why I’m asking on the Apple board.

Unless someone has used a Yubikey here, it is unlikely you will get an answer.

Compatible adapter?

Ask Yubikey. They should know what adapter is compatible with their device when trying to use it on a Mac, if they support Macs and know they work on Macs and what needs to be done to have them work.

Can I use a PC to register with Apple?

Again, ask Yubikey. They should. know if it possible to use a PC to register whatever it is you need to register.

“Any YubiKey model can be plugged either directly into an iOS/iPadOS device or using a compatible adapter”

Again, only Yubikey can possibly know what models of their devices can be used with iOS devices. There is a list of devices compatible with iOS devices in the link I posted above at Yubico's website.

Yubikey is in charge of it products and should know what is compatible and how to set them up.

If Yubikey can't answer those questions, then I would question the quality of their support.

You want help for a third party product from people who have no ties to the product unless they have used it, and the people who made the product can't provide it?
