Text via Wi-Fi but can’t receive replies until I get cell coversge

I send messages to another iPhone via Wi-Fi . Sometimes I’ve noticed the replies won’t come thru till I drive into cell coverage.

some days same location the the will come the no problem via Wi-Fi .

I’ve noticed if a person sends or I send a msg from an old conversation that was initiated in cell coverage, the messages don’t come thru till I get to cell coverage they won’t come in while I’m on Wi-Fi

why is this? How can I avoid these problems (be nice)

Hello BruceAAMS,

If you have not done so already, please make sure to restart your iPhone by following these steps: Restart your iPhone. This simple step can help with many unexpected behaviors.

We'd also suggest that you the full message thread of one affected conversation and start a new one, then test to see if that behavior persists: Delete messages on iPhone.

If the issue persists, further assistance may be needed. We want to make sure you reach the right team for help with your device, so we recommend that you contact Apple Support directly. Depending on your region, you may be able to reach them here: Apple Support

Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities and have a wonderful day.

Hey there BruceAAMS,

Let's start with confirming more details to better understand what's happening, along with ruling out some possible causes:

  1. When the issue does occur, what exactly shows after sending the message when using your Wi-Fi network? The more details you provide, the better we'll understand what's occurring when you try.
  2. When did this start to occur?
  3. You mentioned that this sometimes occurs when being connected to your Wi-Fi network, but you have no issues when using only cellular. Does this also occur when you're connected to a different Wi-Fi network at another location?
  4. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart: Restart your iPhone
  5. If you have a compatible iPhone model, the latest version is iOS 16.3. You can verify this within Settings > General > About. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then Update your iPhone or iPad.

Cheers!
