I have a new Studio, with Ventura 13.1
I noticed, and just deleted, about 100GB from my Mail account. All good.
Mail not takes up only 450mb.
BUTNOW, my SYSTEM DATA storage data has jumped to 167GB.
I suspect that two events are related.
How can I safely lower SYSTEM DATA storage?

In the System Settings for Time Machine you will see a +/- underneath your TM drive, click the - (minus) and to turn it back on click + (plus) and setup again. This doesn't delete old backups (I just tried it)
I haven't had to do this much but it doesn't take long. The simplest way is to turn of TM, go and have a coffee, then turn it back on when you return.

Every month my Time Machine storage creeps up by about 20 - 30%.
So, every month I erase the HD and back up again. (For safety, I alternate HDs.)
Will this help? Or will it have the same effect as your method?

Just curious. So, the 100GB of mail that I deleted from my computer seemingly is still stored on the Time Machine as "System data" ? I understand why that data would be on the external HD, but not sure why it would still be on my Studio.

The window Time Machine is different on Ventura from what I am used to. Forgive me for being slow, but I don't see how to turn it off.
The only option I can find is "Exclude from backups".
