iOS 16.3 update problems for iphone X

Fetches request to manual update, auto-update selected, then screen freezes followed by auto restart after several minutes without the update installed. My iphone X (iOS Version 16.1.1) is fully charged plugged in 5.36GB free from 64GB capacity for a 1.01GB update. Any ideas apart from the usual backup, wipe clean and reinstall! I read that the update should be good for iphone 8 and above.

Please check:

You need about 6 GB device storage and good Service & Wi-Fi.

If they are On, turn Off Hotspot & VPN.

Charge the battery > 70%.

Even though it is charged at 100% and plugged in, that weak, degraded original battery will cause issues. The risk is that, during the next upgrade, the battery will fail more seriously resulting in a 'bricked' iPhone. ...You won't even be able to prepare it for battery replacement:

Thank you for the advice - the minimum capacity needed (6GB), probably needed for swap files during installation. In the end I reset everything, a long task saving everything, back to factory settings. Then I updated without problem to newest iOS (16.3) and my old iPhone X working like new except for the poor battery performance which I have learned to live with.

My iPhone X has its original battery and has been degraded to 77% over time. However, when I tried to upgrade the iOS it was 100% charged and plugged in. There probably was a background hardware compatiblity / maintenance check before upgrade but it’s working now which seems to suggest the lack of free capacity was the likely cause of failure to upgrade and hence frozen screen.
