Microsoft Office for iPad Air

I really want to use Microsoft Office Word and Excel on my recently delivered new iPad AIR …NOT Microsoft Office 365! I want to store the docs and spreadsheets on my device, not in iCloud. I know from experience Office 365 almost forces you to save to iCloud. I keep ending up with one version on my laptop and a different one in the cloud.

Researching this, it appears that Microsoft Office released earlier than 2020 will work on an iPad Mini (smaller than 10.1”) but the 2021 version won’t work on any iPad. On Amazon it specifies it is only for a Windows PC or a MAC. Is this possible?

If anyone can help me with an answer or a solution it will be much appreciated.
