AirPods Pro (2nd) second generation battery drains and missing battery indicator light but sound?

Hello! I've had second generation AirPod Pros for about two months. They are great, but I've noticed what I'd call a near deal-breaking issue which is that it appears the battery will randomly "die."

The thing is, I'm not actually 100% sure that the batteries are actually dead-dead, because what will happen is I'll get the AirPods case out and put the headphones in, and then realize I'm not able to connect them to my Mac/iPhone. So I think "oh this is a weird bluetooth thing" and put the AirPods back in the case (to try to fix / reset the bluetooth connection) at which point I hear the audio chime from the case indicating things are charging but there is no light. But the case no longer connects to my mac, or iPhone to report battery level. So the case makes a sound, but I can't connect anything. So are the AirPods dead? How did they die when the case was pretty well charged before?

My previous AirPods Pro (gen 1) I could charge them once a week and they'd almost always be ready to use (I don't use them all that often, mainly for meetings). But this has happened several times now with the new ones where I'll charge the case for the night, use the AirPods once, then run into this issue. I'd expect I should still have HOURS of battery life based on my intuition / experience from my previous gen.

If the AirPod Pros are dead dead, I'd think the case shouldn't make any sounds when I open / close the case. I'd think the battery indicator would take less power than a speaker? The sound makes me think "oh, things are charging... something is happening" - but then the batteries all seem completely dead and I'm unable to even connect to my computer / iphone to check battery life. It leaves me completely lacking confidence in what is happening.

I'm wondering if I'm missing something, if (perhaps because of Find My, this is just expected? But I really hope not).

Thanks for any feedback / thoughts / fixes!

FWIW I'm on 5B58 apparently. That said I did recently update my iphone, and I'm not sure if recently the AirPods Pro firmware was updated or anything, so take this with a grain of salt.

Hello shoelessone,

It sounds like resetting your AirPods may be helpful with this issue, as that step can resolve many charging issues: How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro. Follow this guidance:

    1. "Put your AirPods in their charging case, and close the lid.
    2. Wait 30 seconds.
    3. Open the lid of your charging case, and put your AirPods in your ears.
    4. Go to Settings > Bluetooth. Or go to Settings > [your AirPods].
      • If your AirPods appear there as connected, tap the More Info button  next to your AirPods, tap Forget This Device, then tap again to confirm.
      • If your AirPods don't appear there, continue to the next step.

5. Put your AirPods in their charging case, and keep the lid open.

6. Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds, until the status light on the front of the case flashes amber, then white.*

7. Reconnect your AirPods: With your AirPods in their charging case and the lid open, place your AirPods close to your iPhone or iPad. Follow the steps on your device's screen.

AirPods can be associated with one Apple ID. If you want to use AirPods (3rd generation) or AirPods Pro (1st or 2nd generation) that someone else has used, they first need to remove the AirPods from their Apple ID."

We hope this helps. Let us know if we can assist with anything else at all. Take care.
