Unable to upload videos to iCloud

I am trying to upload some photos and videos to iCloud. When I get to iCloud.com, then select Photos, it takes me to a page that says No Photos or Videos with an Upload button below it. When I click it, it will not let me select any videos, and when I try to drag and drop one in, it says only files in JPEG format can be uploaded. Not sure why it's not working, since the page says No Photos or Videos when I get to it, implying that you can upload videos. Is there a step that I am missing?

Pritch,

You can use iCloud Drive to upload some videos into folders if that's your preference as the website only allows for JPEG format as you've seen and iCloud Photos is a syncing service that will sync the entire library and photos within the Photos app.

You can use Finder to drag and drop videos into iCloud Drive: Access and manage your files in iCloud Drive - Apple Support

Take care.

Hello Pritch,

Thanks for asking about adding Photos and Videos to iCloud. We'd be happy to look into this with you!

You mentioned that you receive an alert that a JPEG format must be uploaded, can you tell us which file format you're attempting to upload? If you're not sure, check out: Show or hide filename extensions on Mac - Apple Support

You mentioned that you're attempting to upload those using the iCloud website, since you posted in iCloud on my Mac, we wanted to let you know that you can also set up and use iCloud Photos without using the website: Set up and use iCloud Photos - Apple Support

If using the steps above, are you able to upload photos? This can help us determine if this is isolated to the iCloud website, and isolate this further.

Thanks.

Hey there Pritch,

From what we understand, it sounds like you're not having an issue syncing videos from your Mac to iCloud with the Photos app, but you also showed us the screenshot that shows there are no photos/videos detected. Let's confirm more details to bette understand what's happening, along with ruling out some possible causes:

  1. Was there a time when photos and videos synced without any issues from your Mac, and you were able to view them on the iCloud website? If yes, let us know when the issue started to occur.
  2. How did you know that your videos synced with iCloud through the Photos app on your Mac?
  3. Are you signing into the same Apple ID as the one that's signed in for iCloud on your Mac?
  4. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart. Check out the section ‘Restart your Mac' here: Shut down or restart your Mac
  5. If you have a compatible Mac model, the latest version is macOS 13.2. You can verify this by clicking on the Apple logo at the top left corner of the screen, then on ‘About This Mac’. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then Update macOS on Mac.

Cheers!

Hi ManJor. Yes I was trying to upload .mov files to iCloud Photos. When I get to the iCloud Photos screen, it said “No photos or videos uploaded”. That seemed to imply that you could upload videos as well as photos. Is this not true? Seems misleading I tried to drag and drop a .mov file there, but it said jpeg is the only allowed file type. I want to back up my photos as well as videos, but not necessarily through iPhone. These are pics and videos that I’m taking with other devices. I am an amateur photographer and videographer and am looking for a way to back up my content to the cloud. The ultimate goal would be to sort the photo and video iCloud content by folders and view them on my Apple TV.

Hi Bruno. Thanks for your reply. I am currently on an older Mac, running 10.13 High Sierra. I'll be getting a new Mac soon though. I wasn't trying to use any type of syncing feature. I currently have the photos app that contains all of my iPhone photos and video. I didn't want to upload all of that to the cloud, but was wanting to just upload select photos and videos, creating folders for each event. I was able to manually upload some images by drag and drop, but no videos, because of the error "only JPEG format can be uploaded". So is there a way to manually upload videos to the cloud? Or is syncing your entire photos app library the only way?
