stage manager confusing

A family member who briefly used my MacBook Pro a few weeks ago set up Stage Manager (or at least I think that's what it is). I had been using the Dock to store minimized files that I frequently accessed but didn't always need to have open. It has its advantages but sometimes drives my crazy when I can't seem to see the two files or apps I want to use. For example, I copied some text from a website and wanted to paste it into a Pages file, but couldn't keep them open at the same time. Or I copied a photo from Facebook and wanted to move it into an email. I quit all my other apps, etc., hoping that if only the photo and mail were open I could see them, but even that didn't work. (I eventually just dragged it.) I admit I haven't studied any help guides, but for the most part it hasn't taken any research to figure out how to use this function. It just occasionally frustrates me because I can't access the items I need. Any hot tips?
