Want a new Mac but worried about noise. Which is quieter, Studio Max or Ultra?

Which is quieter, Studio Max or Ultra? I have read the fans constantly run at 1,300 rpm and people are complaining about them not being silent.

Background:

I am moving from a silent 27" late 2013 iMac upgraded to 28Gb RAM and 4Tb SSD storage of which I have already used 2.5Tb. I now need a replacement because it won't run anything later than El Capitan. With global warming and high prices for electricity I want an energy efficient, quiet replacement but Apple have screwed up the options.

  • Ideally I would like a new M1 chipped 27" iMac. No, Can't have that.
  • More than 4Tb storage? Not on a 24" iMac.
  • Laptops? I am definitely not interested, I only use a big screen desktop machine (photo editing, large spreadsheets, database design plus browsing).

Choices now are Mac mini (new) or Mac Studio.

  • The Mac mini, designed for consumers perhaps, has no SSD card slot.
  • The Mac Studio fans never switch off, that uses power and is said to be intrusively noisy.
  • The Mac Studio recommended operating temperature range is only from 10C to 35C, and with much of Northern Europe hitting record high temperatures over 40C quite often in summer and more to come with global warming, 35C is worryingly low.
  • Both the Mac mini and the Mac Studio generate cable spaghetti which the iMac significantly got rid of (in-built display, webcam, speakers, SD card reader.
  • Bluetooth devices need batteries which are bad for the environment.

So it is likely I will have to get the Mac Studio, despite not doing videos, just Photo editing in Adobe Lightroom - I used to use Aperture but Apple deprecated it before bringing it back after realising their mistake. They are making bad choices based on profits using coercive marketing, and not user needs. Just look at the pricing! Whatever choice I make now will end up with a less Mac-like computer than my late 2013 27" iMac. And it will be noisy which I hate.

It is clear Jonny Ive has left Apple.

One user refused to give up on the noise coming from the Mac Studio. They kept plugging away and trying different things and made a surprising discovery. It is not fans roaring, or power supplies coil-whining, or 110 volts or 220 Volts, or Pro or Max processors that are the likely source of the noises detected.

Their device was making a whistling noise. Like a flute. It has something harmonic going on, where covering part of the side portion of the air exit stops the annoying noise completely.

Haha! Yes, I know that feeling! Do either of your Studio Ultras make the same noise recorded in the link Grant posted? The first audio has a distinct whistle, the second none. I'm wondering if the Max or Ultra would be quieter. I assumed the Ultra with more power (overkill for my needs) would run hotter and make more fan noise, but this whining seems to be a problem on the Max? I'd love to see some sound comparisons in dB...

You read too much into anecdotal reports by users of unknown competence and skills.

Your last paragraph seals the deal. If you’ve lost confidence in Apple and its products which you clearly have, then don’t buy anything from Apple. Buy something else and be happy with Windows or Linux. Your post is a clear statement that you are no longer an Apple customer, especially this diatribe, "They are making bad choices based on profits using coercive marketing, and not user needs.” Good luck.

@andydajo

I was thinking of Catalina, I just wrote it wrong.

I now have a Mac Ultra which I use with my LG 32" 4k monitor. The thing I find most annoying about the monitor is it does not handle rapid movement very well, for normal work it is fine, but if you want to view video content or stream TV it rapidly tires your eyes. The Apple 27" monitor is 60% more expensive though so a hard pill to choke on, while the larger Apple monitor is way over-priced. Just lately I have thought Apple is taking the mick with the exorbitant prices, the lack of user upgradeability, the under-specification of the lower models and the withdrawal of the 27" iMac.
