Table of Contents - page numbers in a 2-column page layout shifts to the second line

I would like for the number to stay on the same line - I understand where the line is too long it shifts to the next line however the default appears to make the page number shift down even when there is room to keep it in the same line causing the TOC to be unbearably long. I can't attach a photo however it appears as such on the page:
