Phone number changed in my contact list

Somehow, a phone number in my contact list was changed by one digit. This happened w/o me making any changes to the number. I found out by texting my friend using his name, and got a response “you are sending this to a wrong number”. When I looked at the response I saw the phone number was off by 1 digit. So, I checked my contacts & it was changed there.

How could this happen?

This also happened to my mother’s iphone. She is 84 & I thought she had done something to change my sister’s number, but she hadn’t.

So, now I have seen this happen twice.

Do you know why this is happening & how I can protect my contact list from changes?

Thank you.

Hi Bekatay4692,

Contacts sync across your devices where your Apple ID is logged in.

Do you and your mother share an Apple ID? You shouldn't if you do.

Otherwise, contacts are synced to accounts, whether it's your iCloud or email accounts.

Here's contacts set up info:

There's no way to know how you might have historically changed your contacts accounts. We can't guess more than what we've said already.
