Contacts phone number type has been changed by some update or hack from “Mobile “ to just “PHONE” so all phone types are now “phone”.
why is this happening?

I have just encountered this problem after updating my Windows desktop outlook to the new outlook. I sync using iCloud for windows. Problem resolved after going back to the old Outlook.
What email account are you syncing Contacts to? To find out go to Settings/Contacts/Accounts and see which account or accounts the contacts come from. iCloud supports changing phone labels, but many other contact hosts do not.
regarding previous post and reply on contacts phone labels being changed from my original label of "mobile" or custom label of "cell phone", to just "phone". Just to describe the situation when this happens:
while using voice command to Siri or car Bluetooth system to call
(saying "Call Jim cell phone" Siri or car system reply is "There is no cell phone or mobile" for that contact, then lists all phone numbers and email addresses.
It will not give you even a number choice to dial, and you have to remember the full phone number to start the dialing. The custom labeling is required to choose the right phone number when multiple numbers exist for one contact.

Thank you, it appears only my iPhone and iCloud email address is related or syncing to phone numbers.
there are other accounts but only seem related to other contacts email addresses, not phones, if that makes sense.
I am having this same problem as well. All of my phone number types have changed to “Phone” and some of my nicknames in my contacts are messed up. Has anyone had any luck finding a cause and/or solution (besides manually changing everything back)?

Try not happy. Just wasted 3 hours few weeks ago. And now this again. Can anyone from Apple explain why this is happening.

I too have the same issue. I back up to iCloud and sync with Outlook. I don't want to waste time fixing them if this will happen again.
This just happened with my contacts in the last two weeks.
