Just did a restore to 10.9.5 - NO iPHOTOS!

Does anyone have a link to a compatible image of the ORIGINAL iPhotos that runs on 10.9.5? These updates only work if you have an older version already installed (but of course you probably knew that...) If not, does anyone have a good 3rd party photo manager that works with 10.9.5? I'm not going to allow Apple to steal a perfectly good / working iMac from me and upgrade it in to oblivion (A BOAT ANCHOR!) (which they already did with 10.15)

Is iPhoto in your list of previous purchases at the App Store? If you previously have been running Maverick, years ago, you may have associated iPhoto with your AppleID at the AppStore and can still download it. I am still seeing iPhoto in my previous purchases, when I open the Purchases view at the AppStore, and it can be reinstalled, but not purchased.

If yes, and iPhoto is listed at the AppStore with a purchase date, try the old stand-by to reinstall from the AppStore:

  • Quit the AppStore
  • Move your current iPhoto.app to the trash (don't empty the Trash),
  • Then open again the fourth tab at the AppStore with your previous purchases and sign in with your AppleID
  • Then click the Install button next to iPhoto to download and install it.

For OS X 10.9.5 Mavericks you would need iPhoto 9.5; the version I am still seeing at the AppStore for reinstalling is iPhoto 9.6.1, the compatibility update OS X 10.10.3, but if you are lucky (i cannot test it) the AppStore will offer you an iPhoto 9.5 version for your Mavericks system.

But I could still redownload it, even on macOS 13 Ventura:

None of the download links at Apple - Support - Downloads are for iPhoto versions compatible with your system version. They are for MacOS 10.7 Lion or earlier.

iPhoto v9, which is the one you are referring to was only available via the App Store. Downloading from an other source, apart from being piracy, would be reckless to your security.

You will find it difficult to find an up-to-date app that still runs on an OS from almost 10 years ago. While it is not a direct replacement for iPhoto, Graphics Converter v10 has an excellent file browser and can be got here:

Where did you restore from?

I've had iPhoto on every Mac from a Dual G4-450 (Motorola CPU) up to this one. The only app I ever remember buying was GarageBand (which is also now not available for 10.15!!) The M1 Mac Mini of course has Photos. I was running 10.15 but as I mentioned in another post, with the last update from Apple, it was almost totally unusable (SLOW, latency). It runs fine with 10.9.5 (and ran fine prior to the past few updates).
I'm suspecting this is all part of Apple's "upgrade yourself out of a usable system / come buy a new one" ploy.
Thanks for your reply.

The Mac AppStore makes it easy to keep our Apple apps up to date, but it it only catering to the current system version and prhaps the predecessor. Since the introduction of the Mac AppStore we have to install the system upgrades while they are the current system version. If we are waiting too long, we may no longer be able to get the apps for the older system versions at all, if we did not purchase them, when the system version has first been released.

I upgraded to OSX 10.9.5 Mavericks, when it came out. At that time we had a small window of opprtunity, where we could associate our iLife Applications, purchased on iLife DVDs, with our AppleID at the AppStore. And we could install the necessary updates for GarageBand and iPhoto from the AppStore. This window of opportunity has been closed, when OSX 10.10.3 with the new Photos.app has been released. Now it is too late to turn the old iLife licences into AppStore licences. GarageBand 10 is free now, but you need to have a recent version of OS X instaleld, to be able to purchase it for free now.

Thanks for the info... I downgraded from 10.15 because with every update from Apple, the system runs slower. It basically got to the point to where it was not usable (clocking when bringing an already open/loaded app to the foreground).

I also saw NORD VPN on the App Store, and I could install it, but once it was installed, the icon was a "ghost" saying I couldn't run it without some newer OS version...

I restored it to 10.9.5 over the internet, FROM APPLE, using the appropriate shift key combination. It seems to me if the OS is still available from Apple, so should the accompanying Apple software for the same OS.

I wouldn't expect Apple to provide tech support / patches for such old software, but I don't see what would be wrong with making the few software packages they made available for download, just as the OS is.

Thanks for the tip on that software, I'm familiar with that company so I'll check it out.
