symlink home directory subfolders -

Hello -

I have a 2018 MacMini running Big Sur 11.7.2

Currently, I have my home directory off-loaded to an external HDD using the "advanced options" in System Preferences.

Due to their size, I'd like to move certain subfolders - Movies, Music, Pictures - to another HDD.

I've tried using a symlink - which works for pointing from the home folder to the moved folder.

But I then cannot delete the original folder - rendering the symlink pointless.

Is there a way to do this?

Thanks -

If you are moving your Movies, Music & Pictures folders you should 1) copy the folders to your new location and then 2) just change the library locations in the respective apps - TV, Music & Photos. There is no need to use symlinks for those libraries ... plus it's easier and preferable just to change the library locations in each app's Preferences.
