2G/3G/4G can not be selected separately

I would rather prefer to select a radio access technology offered by my actual network carrier than leave that to be automatically done by iPhone based on detected signal strength from neighboring radio towers. I don’t want to leave iPhone to take that decision instead of me. Why that flexibility is not provided by the iOS? How can I select a preferred RAT(Radio Access Technology)?

Thank you and best Regards.

Indeed,I have to ask my actual carrier provider about any available profile settings, probably would be necessary to replace my actual physical SIM card but I’m not sure. Actual I see just 3 available network switches: 5G, 5G Auto and LTE. If I’m selecting 5G Auto option and activate cellular data then iPhone is using data of 3G network which means RF chip selects 3G network automatically based on most suitable detected signal level. Unfortunately I don’t have any 2G/3G switch settings and here I suppose those switches are disabled in iOS to allow the phone to select faster network technology available for better user experience. Here I have to remark: iPhone model is 2894. And another remark: 5G networks can work side by side with 2G/3G networks if there is available RF spectrum.

Hello Bob,

Thank you for your fast feedback, however your answer is a generic one and doesn’t have any relation to services provided by carriers around the world which still maintain their 2G/3G networks. My actual carrier for example is providing 2G services and I want to use that service to avoid battery faster draining in 4G for example compare to less draining in 2G mode.

2G has been obsolete for some time and 3G has now been phased out by every carrier in the U.S. and most internationally.

So, it would not make much sense for a carrier to provide an option to connect to a signal that no longer exists.

Your iPhone picks up its connection options from your carrier, so you will only see what your carrier wants you to see in terms of connection options. If you want to see more options from your carrier, you will need to get in touch with your carrier.

Be that as it may, the options available are provided by your carrier, not by Apple. The carrier installs a carrier settings file on the phone that defines the services available. If your carrier did not provide switches for older network technologies you need to work with them. Presumably they are phasing them out, because 5G networks cannot work side by side with 2G or 3G networks, as 5G re-uses the bands previously used by 2G and 3G.

You can see if there is an update to carrier settings by going to Settings/General/About; if there is one you will be prompted to install it.

2G/3G/4G can not be selected separately
