iPadOS 16.3 external display only mirroring, no arrangement option

Hi! I’m trying to setup my new external monitor with my iPad running the latest iPadOS. The issue is that though it recognizes the display, it only mirrors the image from the iPad with no “Arrangement” option that one might expect. This occurs both when the monitor is connected over USB-C or over HDMI.

I’m on IPadOS 16.3 and the option to arrange the screens is not coming up as show in the above screenshot. All I get is taken to another screen where I can choose whether to accept Display Mode Changes… it’s all quite disappointing. Only mirroring. Note I’m on an iPad Air 5 but according to everything I read it is supposed to be supported due to being M1 based.

Presumably you are trying to use the new Stage Manager feature - that effectively provides an extended desktop.

To use Stage Manager with an external monitor, your iPad Pro must have either an M1 or M2 CPU - and have been updated to iPadOS 16.2 or later. iPadOS 16.3 is current; if you haven’t already updated to this version, you should do so before proceeding.

With your iPad updated, enable Stage Manager:

Settings > Home Screen & Multitasking > Stage Manager > Use Manager on iPad - set to ON

At this point, you will likely see a mirrored display. You need to change a setting to use Stage Manager with your external display:

Settings > Display & Brightness

You should see two monitors listed - your iPad - and your external monitor; tap on the entry for your connected monitor. You should see something like this:

Ensure the Mirror Display is set to OFF - and tap Set.

You may also wish to enjoy the full resolution capability of your iPad Pro 11” display:

Settings > Display & Brightness > Display Zoom > select More Space, then Done
