Do I have to use the mag safe charger with my MacBook Pro?

I just bought a MacBook Pro which comes with a MagSafe charger. Can I skip the mag safe and just use the Usbc cord from my outlet? I hate having multiple types of cords around the house. Everyone else in my family just uses the usb-c and we have cords stationed around the house. Is there any advantage/disadvantage to not using MagSafe?

Hello nancyfromrancho cordova,

Thanks for asking the Apple Support Communities about the Mac charger. The answer to your question is, it really depends. Let us explain.

First, you need to know what charger you should be using for your Mac: Identify your Mac power adapter - Apple Support

As you can see from the article above, the MacBook Pro can go as high as the 140W charger. That said, the article points out that you should be using one that provides at least the required wattage for that computer. Check your charger and the article, and match the correct wattage.

"If your Mac uses USB-C to charge, you can charge your Mac laptop with any USB-C power adapter or display. For the best charging experience, you should use a power adapter or display that provides at least the minimum wattage of the power adapter included with your MacBook AirMacBook Pro, or MacBook."

Or, instead of using your phone chargers to power your computer, you should instead use your Mac charger for all the devices, as it would provide the minimum wattage, and wouldn't hurt as the iOS devices will only pull as mush as they need which is mentioned here: Charge your iPhone with the USB power adapter of an iPad or Mac laptop - Apple Support

"You can use Apple USB power adapters for iPad and Mac laptops to charge iPhone, Apple Watch, AirPods, and other Apple products."

Thanks.
