Apple Music promotion

I bought a new homepod2 which came with 6 months of free Apple Music for new users. I had been a subscriber in the past, but had cancelled 10 months ago because I didn’t think it was worth the price. As I wasn’t an existing user, I expected to get the promotion, but I was told I was ineligible because of my prior use. There are no dates on the promotion. Does that seem right?
