How to sign in the App Store on original iPhone with iOS 3.x?

When I try to do it on the iPhone directly, the following happens:

Enter correct email and password on iPhone Settings / Store / Sign In
Get an error about the password being incorrect. Options to Cancel or Retry.
On a Mac connected to the same iCloud account, get the confirmation prompt that someone wants to connect to the account from some region.
On the Mac, allow it.
On the Mac, get another alerts with the message:
1. Your Apple ID is being used to sign in to a new device. Type your password followed by this code into the password field on your device. 544 671
On the iPhone, enter the code in the passwrod field
Get another error message about the password being incorrect, with the option to Reset it

What am I doing wrong? Shuold I create a device-specific password?

When entering your password are you immediately entering the 6 digit code into the same text box? We know that can be a bit confusing as some people expect a second text box to enter the code. In this instance, you would enter your password and the code with no spaces right into the same box. Let us know how it goes.

It worked!

I did manage to log in, but now the thing shuts itself down every time I boot it up.
