iPhone keeps asking "Trust this computer and enter a password"

I just conversed with an advisor on Apple Chat support and I mentioned that I have reset my Network, Location and Privacy settings and I kept getting this message to "trust the computer",. He said that iOS 16 REQUIRES a password EVERY TIME even if the computer is trusted...iOS 15 did not have this requirement and Apple needs to put this information on their website!! ... also give us an option to disable this annoying notification when we are dealing with "trusted devices"

This was a change made with iOS 16.1, and it is a workaround for a vulnerability that would allow someone who had hacked your computer to make a backup of your iPhone that they could download and essentially have access to your private information. Here is a summary of the vulnerability:

Available for: iPhone 8 and later, iPad Pro (all models), iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 5th generation and later, iPad mini 5th generation and later

Impact: An app may be able to access iOS backups

Description: A permissions issue was addressed with additional restrictions.

CVE-2022-32929: Csaba Fitzl (@theevilbit) of Offensive Security

You can speedrun Apple's support calls by resetting your watch, iphone and mac to factory defaults and deleting all settings and data. Then log out of every service you have including icloud and spend a couple days rebuilding your devices to what they were before. If that doesn't work, they have nothing. I've never received relevant advice from an Apple support person.

It would be better if you can please re-post with a screenshot, in order to understand the phenomenon better. Images/pictures speak louder than words.

Please understand this is a public forum: While attaching a Screenshot, do not provide any personal credentials, such as IP address, Card detail, email id, apple id, IMEI number, Serial Number, Phone number, Order ID, if you are sharing a map ensure your location is not identifiable, etc.

With the limited information that you have provided, It is hard to even guess the problems faced by you.

Thank you Lawrence!

I just spent close to 2 hours on Apple support trying to resolve this problem that apparently is actually a "feature" now. Support reps had me reset all my settings on my phone again, too, before escalating my issue to the "Senior Advisors team". So now I've got another couple hours of going through and reconfiguring everything. Very annoying, and apparently I still have to put up with entering my passcode every time I want to backup my phone.

I agree with duerded that this seems like a temporary fix at best, and I hope they come up with something better. (Is the encryption on the backup not already enough to protect sensitive information?) I also hope that Apple gets around to telling their support reps about this change so that everyone else with an iPhone that they connect to their computer doesn't have to go through this as well.

I would have chosen not to encrypt the backup myself, since I generally trust that my computer is as secure as I need it to be, but the Finder warned me that it would not back up my "sensitive personal data" like passwords and health data if I didn't encrypt it. So I always had my backups encrypted, since I wasn't interested in a partial backup.

Thinking about it in this context, this is a good security measure against the problem Apple tried to fix as well. If an unencrypted backup simply does not include sensitive personal data, the risk of data theft is far less.

I have the same issue, and I have automatic syncing turned off. I've toggled it on, done the trust this computer/ enter device passcode dance, toggled it off, and done it again. My iPhone never remembers my MacBook Air. It never "remains trusted", as another article puts it. They are Apple ID registered devices, but this makes no difference. If this is a security feature (zero devices are ever trusted), then why couldn't the iPhone "use Face ID" rather than "enter device code" in the "trust this computer" dialog? This has been going on for years and years, and it is ridiculous.

My first post regarding this issue was removed by apple. Allow me to re-phrase the issue, in a perfectly truthful manner. If you prefer to constantly have to re-trust your connection to your apple account online, then you will love apple phones online phone access. If you adore and prefer NOT to be able to save your login and password on a browser, then you will adore and appreciate apple phones constant reminder to input all your info every...single.. time you log in. YOU CANNOT BYPASS THIS APPLE TRUST REQUEST ON A BROWSER.
