iPhone keeps asking "Trust this computer and enter a password"

I just conversed with an advisor on Apple Chat support and I mentioned that I have reset my Network, Location and Privacy settings and I kept getting this message to "trust the computer",. He said that iOS 16 REQUIRES a password EVERY TIME even if the computer is trusted...iOS 15 did not have this requirement and Apple needs to put this information on their website!! ... also give us an option to disable this annoying notification when we are dealing with "trusted devices"

This was a change made with iOS 16.1, and it is a workaround for a vulnerability that would allow someone who had hacked your computer to make a backup of your iPhone that they could download and essentially have access to your private information. Here is a summary of the vulnerability:

Available for: iPhone 8 and later, iPad Pro (all models), iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 5th generation and later, iPad mini 5th generation and later

Impact: An app may be able to access iOS backups

Description: A permissions issue was addressed with additional restrictions.

It would be better if you can please re-post with a screenshot, in order to understand the phenomenon better. Images/pictures speak louder than words.

Please understand this is a public forum: While attaching a Screenshot, do not provide any personal credentials, such as IP address, Card detail, email id, apple id, IMEI number, Serial Number, Phone number, Order ID, if you are sharing a map ensure your location is not identifiable, etc.

With the limited information that you have provided, It is hard to even guess the problems faced by you.

Change your settings for trusted computers

Your device remembers the computers you've chosen to trust.

If you don't want to trust a computer or other device anymore, reset the Location & Privacy settings on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [Device] > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy. Now when you connect to formerly trusted computers, the Trust alert will ask you whether you trust that computer.

Hi SranvanKrA,

I appreciate you responding to my inquiry. I'll clarify a few things for you. All of my iPhones have been trusted by my MacBook Pro computers for 15+ years including my current iPhone 13. The reason that I contacted an Apple adviser is because since the iOS15 to iOS16 update my iPhone started asking me to trust my computer EVERY TIME I connect it to my computer using the USB-C to iPhone chord. As I mentioned in my initial posting I have already reset my Location & Privacy settings on my iPhone and allowed my computer to trust my iPhone multiple times to remedy this problem. The Apple adviser said that iOS16 requires a password even with trusted computers. I just think that it would be helpful to have this information on Apple's website that I originally posted and give us an option to turn off this trust computer prompt in iOS16.

Thank you Lawrence!

I just spent close to 2 hours on Apple support trying to resolve this problem that apparently is actually a "feature" now. Support reps had me reset all my settings on my phone again, too, before escalating my issue to the "Senior Advisors team". So now I've got another couple hours of going through and reconfiguring everything. Very annoying, and apparently I still have to put up with entering my passcode every time I want to backup my phone.

I agree with duerded that this seems like a temporary fix at best, and I hope they come up with something better. (Is the encryption on the backup not already enough to protect sensitive information?) I also hope that Apple gets around to telling their support reps about this change so that everyone else with an iPhone that they connect to their computer doesn't have to go through this as well.

I would have chosen not to encrypt the backup myself, since I generally trust that my computer is as secure as I need it to be, but the Finder warned me that it would not back up my "sensitive personal data" like passwords and health data if I didn't encrypt it. So I always had my backups encrypted, since I wasn't interested in a partial backup.

Thinking about it in this context, this is a good security measure against the problem Apple tried to fix as well. If an unencrypted backup simply does not include sensitive personal data, the risk of data theft is far less.
