iPhone keeps asking "Trust this computer and enter a password"

This was a change made with iOS 16.1, and it is a workaround for a vulnerability that would allow someone who had hacked your computer to make a backup of your iPhone that they could download and essentially have access to your private information. Here is a summary of the vulnerability:

Available for: iPhone 8 and later, iPad Pro (all models), iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 5th generation and later, iPad mini 5th generation and later

Impact: An app may be able to access iOS backups

Description: A permissions issue was addressed with additional restrictions.

The REAL FIX!

I finally found it after a few months! Turn off your Hot Spot.. It seems kinda dumb but that did it for me.

"Make sure your Personal Hotspot is turned off. If your personal Hotspot is turned on every time your plug the device into the Macbook it will ask for permission and make you enter your PIN password.

For those struggling with the "trust this computer" message repeatedly popping up that keeps you from clicking either button to proceed, here is how I resolved it (I post it here b/c other posts about this related issue have been locked):

Switching to the lighting-to-USB-C cable resolved my problem.

Resetting both the privacy and the network settings did not help in my case.

I had this flashing alert message issue whenever I used the old lighting-to-USB-2.0 cable to connect my iPhone 14 plus to my Macbook Pro. When I switched to the lighting-to-USB-C cable coming with my iPhone 14 plus, along with a USB-C-to-USB port adapter, the trust message was able to stay still for me to click the "trust " option to proceed.

Lawrence Finch answer is the best one, but to get around the annoyance of having to type in your code all the time, turn OFF automatic syncing. You'll just have to remember to sync and back up once in a while.

Turn automatic syncing on or off on Mac – Apple Support (AU)

My solution was to unpair the device in Xcode:

Step by step:

• Connect and Authorize the Device (putting in the passcode if necessary)
• Xcode → Window (menu) → Devices and Simulators → Devices → Right Click on your device → Unpair Device
• The authorisation prompt will appear immediately on the device
• Authorize and put in the passcode if necessary
• It shouldn't ask to authorize next time

I found a different workaround.

This is regarding an issue where Trust This Computer dialogue was toggling on / off so fast that I couldn't click on it !

I couldn't connect at all to Itunes or photos but now I can.

I also suffer from this problem. If you to backup your iOS device to your computer, you must type in your passcode every time. Apple want’s it to be cumbersome so that you choose to backup your device to the cloud. More data saved on your AppleID, the more $$$ for Apple. If I turn off local backups, problem solved.

Change your settings for trusted computers

Your device remembers the computers you've chosen to trust.

If you don't want to trust a computer or other device anymore, reset the Location & Privacy settings on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [Device] > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy. Now when you connect to formerly trusted computers, the Trust alert will ask you whether you trust that computer.

I must say though, that if some had "hacked my computer" I might have more serious things to worry about than this!

In any case, I think that the "fix" is not acceptable, and to some degree worse than the problem.

Hopefully they are working on a better one.

I thought this was standard, every iPhone I have had and O/S from Win XP to Win 7 now I have gotten this prompt, "Trust this Computer", I could answer Yes, disconnect, connect five minutes later and I would still get the prompt. It's mind boggling to me knowing this is not correct that programmers get away with not fixing this for customers, would not happen in my job, this bug would be fixed lickety split or I would be fixed, out the door. A lot of the time I am using my Hotspot and connecting via cable with Wi-Fi on my iPhone turned off but I also get the prompt when I connect to sync data so much so I thought this was normal, a security option, but no.

EVERY TIME.. Yeah, this is not an issue of security. It is a TRUSTED COMPUTER.. That we just want to remember the trust bond between phone and computer. Come on Apple.. Don't give those Android peeps and room to gloat again.. We smooov
