New “<“ MENU button
Does this “back” button still eliminate the very annoying pause feature on YouTube and NOWTV where the pop-up virtually covers up the still picture you want to see and greys it out practically completely?

The < Back button has the exact same functionality as the Menu button on earlier models remote.
How pop-ups work in certain apps, and what they might cover of the background, is not influenced by the remote. That is up to each app. Contact the app publisher if you would like to see this covering behavior corrected in a future app update. How to contact an app developer - Apple Support.
