tv speakers vs receiver

I have an odd situation. I have recently upgraded my apple tv from a previous apple tv, to the newer appleTV4k. None of the other audio gear or tv was changed, I just unplugged the power cable and hdmi cable from the old one and plugged the new one in.

The apple TV hdmi cable runs to the AV receiver hdmi input, and the AV receiver HDMI output runs to the TV. I am using a yamaha receiver and a samsung TV.

I use the apple remote power button, and everything turns on just fine... the tv comes on, the receiver comes on, and the apple tv comes on.

But exactly every other time, it defaults to tv speakers, not receiver speakers. when this occurs, there is no way option to select receiver speakers. The location of the volume display on the TV is also a different location on the screen when I change the volume. and its definately NOT playing audio through the receiver system, it is using the tv's internal speakers

If I use the apple tv remote to power it all down, and then restart it like I always do, the next time it will default to the receiver speakers. Its precisely every other time. SO I am now in the habit of turning it on, turning it all off, then turning it on again. Its the only workaround I have found. I cant locate any change to the settings that corrects this. It worked great with the older model apple tv, only this new one is every other time. Exactly every other time.

ANy ideas? My apple tv does update automatically, so it is running current software.

Hi Jimboseibo,

Thanks for contacting Apple Support Communities!

We understand that you need to restart your Apple TV in order for it to use the correct audio output.

You can adjust the audio output for your Apple TV as outlined here: Adjust video and audio settings on Apple TV - Apple Support

"You can adjust other audio settings, such as sound effects and music, audio format, and more.

  1. Open Settings  on Apple TV.
  2. Go to Video and Audio.
  3. Change any of the following:
    • Audio output (Apple TV 4K): If you connect one or two HomePod speakers to Apple TV for home theater surround sound, all audio, including navigation clicks, is routed to the HomePod speaker(s). You can change this setting to other available speaker options. See Use Apple TV to play audio throughout your home.
    • Audio output (Apple TV HD): You can choose to play audio through your TV speakers or AirPods, Bluetooth headphones, or another AirPlay speaker. See Use Apple TV to play audio throughout your home.
    • Audio format: By default, Apple TV uses the best audio format available. You can change the audio format if you’re experiencing problems with playback. Select Audio Format, then select Change Format and choose either Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital 5.1, or Stereo.
    • Navigation clicks: Select Navigation Clicks to turn them on or off.
    • Sound effects and music: Select Sound Effects and Music to turn them on or off.
    • Audio mode: Apple TV can automatically switch the audio mode for the best audio output. If your TV requires 16-bit audio, select Audio Mode to change from Auto to 16-bit."

We hope this helps you.

Cheers!
