Google Earth glitches

You don't mention what version you have. Also, Google Earth Pro is available for Free now so if you haven't already, download and install Google Earth Pro and the latest version which is, 7.3.4.8642. Just as info, I'm running the Pro version on an M1 iMac and am not having the issue you've reported.

You're not mistaken. I was in error about the most recent version. You now have the most current version as of 2-11-2023. As a side note, the app doesn't auto check for updates or offer a way to check for updates from within. So occasionally (maybe once a year or if you have issues with the app) you might want to download and re-install from their website to be updated.

Further, they also have a web based Google Earth that works very nicely as well. Then .....version numbers (or app anomalies) will no longer matter:
