Play/pause button does not work with picture-in-picture video

I have two Mac's, one running macOS Catalina and the newer one running macOS Ventura. On macOS Catalina, when I am watching a picture-in-picture video (let's say from YouTube), I can use the play/pause button (F8), to control the pip video. On macOS Venture however, this does not work and opens the Apple Music app instead. How do I get the same behavior on Ventura, like on Catalina?

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities af_pascal,

The following steps will allow you to play a web video with Picture in Picture on your Mac running macOS Ventura:

1: In the Safari app  on your Mac, navigate to the web video you want to play.

2: Click and hold the Audio button in the Smart Search field or in a tab.

3: Choose Enter Picture in Picture.

You can drag the window to any corner of the screen and the window stays put, even if you switch desktop spaces. You can resize the window to see more or less of what’s behind it. Click the Close button  to close the Picture in Picture window.

You can find these steps, along with additional information you may find helpful, here: Safari User Guide - Play web videos in Safari on Mac

Cheers!

Hey mikeg28806,

thanks for your reply! I probably should have specified my request better. Actually playing web videos with Safari in PIP mode and using the play/pause button works 👍

What however does not work is for example, when I am using the Apple Developer app to watch WWDC videos. When I enter the Picture in Picture there and then press play/pause, the Apple Music app opens.

Do you also have any idea how to fix that?

Thank you and best regards,

Pascal

Thank you, so you would say that this behavior is specifically related to the Apple Developer app or all in app videos?

Respectfully, that’s kinda your job to figure out what does and what doesn’t, as you’re the one here reporting a bug.

I don’t have the same Mac configuration as you are testing, so reproducing your report here is a non-starter. It’s also quite possible you have some keyboard shortcut enabled for F8, as well—but again, I don‘t have a feasible way to duplicate this case.

The Developer app on iPadOS works as expected with the system-wide controls. I’m unaware of a developer app on macOS.

Narrow down what is (or us not) happening, and log your report.
