Lightning wired earpod buttons not working

I have been using the lightning wired earpods for like a year with no problem, but now i’m having trouble. I’ve been able to use the physical buttons on the wired earpods to turn up/down the volume and pause/skip songs in the past, but a couple days ago i got a message that appeared on my screen saying “Is this Lightning adapter connecting a pair of headphones?”. I tried restarting my phone cleaning the charging port on my phone, and hitting “forget all adapters” but nothing is working. I can still listen to music through the wired earpods, but i cannot control the volume or pause/skip buttons.
