How to install OS 10.15 on External Drive?

I have an External 1TB Drive formatted as Mac OS Extended Journaled.

I want to install 10.15 on this External Drive (contacted using a SATA to USB drive enclosure).

The Apple Support's Install Instructions state to use 1 of 3 versions of Command-R.

As I want to install the latest version of macOS from the internet (10.15, in my case), I believe I should use "Press and hold Option-Command-R until a spinning globe appears, then release the keys".

How do I select the External Drive as the destination?

I have not tried this completely because it appears to want to do the Install on the Internal Drive.

Thank you, in advance, for your time ans assistance.

macOS 10.15 Catalina must be installed on a drive that is formatted with APFS and a GUID partition map.

Launch Disk Utility to accomplish that.

Please see: File system formats available in Disk Utility on Mac - Apple Support

When done, download the Catalina installer and launch it, selecting the newly partitioned external drive and follow the prompts.

No, don't try to launch anything on that screen. This is the result of an incomplete, failed installation. Not sure just why, so let's just start over by partitioning the external drive again.

• Restart your Mac again normally.

• Launch Disk Utility and ensure that you select View > Show All Devices.

• Select your external device now – not any indented drive volume that may be shown – and then click Partition.

If you are prompted to Add Volume, don't. Choose Partition. Choose the APFS format and click Apply.

When that's done, reboot your Mac in Recovery using the ⌘R key combo.

When the macOS Utilities window appears, select Reinstall macOS, click Continue and follow the prompts to reinstall the OS onto the external drive.

When the process is complete, your mini may restart and begin the setup process as would a new Mac, starting with the language selection screen. At this point you can Quit and shut down the computer... or you may continue and set up the new OS as you would like your Mac to be when it next starts from the external drive.

I've just confirmed that all of this works with an external hdd (and also an ssd) using a 2012 MacBook Pro running Catalina 10.15.7.

You're welcome.

The Catalina installer that you may have used previously will have deleted itself after the installation was complete.

Yes, if you boot into Recovery (⌘R) you can then install the OS onto your external drive.

If it does not show up as available for installation, make sure you have erased and reformatted that external drive with APFS and GUID as noted above. You can use the Disk Utility provided in Recovery to do that.

Please make sure you have a current backup of your startup drive before you do this. Just in case.

Check your Applications folder for previously downloaded Catalina installers. Delete them, empty the trash, reboot for good measure and attempt the download again from the link in the doc I posted earlier.

Use only Safari to download the installer.

If you've been attempting to download via your wi-fi network, If possible, connect your Mac to your router with an ethernet cable and try that way.

Another option will be to restart in Safe mode and attempt the download and installation while in that mode. Please see: Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support

Thank you for the info.

I have formatted the external drive as APFS and GUID.

But each time I try to download Catalina, the download goes through "almost" the complete process but then stops. An error message states, each time, that the process was corrupted and the download has been deleted.

I have tried this several times, and even tried to download a different OS version, but still have the same results.

Any suggestions?

Feb 10, 2023 6:19 PM in response to D.I. Johnson

Did not download.

I Restarted in Safe Mode (I assumed it was Safe Mode because I could not find a way to confirm this)

I used the link you provided and when I clicked on Catalina, the process open the App Store to the choice of Catalina. I selected "Get" and then selected "Download". The screen displayed a Process Bar for a few minutes and then displayed the following error again.

Installation failed

An error occurred while installing the selected updates.

I was never given a choice of selecting where to install the OS.

So I don't know if the process was trying to install on my primary drive or not.

Is there any other guidance you can provide?

NOTE:

I noticed that the webpage you directed me to provided the choice to ""download" older OS versions.

For versions 10.7 thru 10.11, I was able to download the Install Package as .dmg files.

But OS versions 10.12 and higher would Not download a .dmg.

Version 10.12 and higher always opened the App Store and went thru the process I described previously, which continued to fail as noted.

Feb 10, 2023 6:43 PM in response to FrankPerry

The newer OS versions don't download a .dmg file, they download an installer application usually named "Install macOS Catalina" or something very similar and can be found in your Applications folder when successfully downloaded.

Safe boot can be confirmed by looking for the Safe Mode identifier at the top right(?) corner of the screen at startup.

I don't know why your OS download from the App Store would be failing.

Exactly which Mac model and year are you attempting to upgrade? And which version of macOS is it running? Click the Apple logo at top left > About this Mac to find that info. Please don't post your serial number.

Thank you for taking the time to try and assist me.

I am using 10.15.7 on a 2012 Mac mini.

I am trying to set up the external 1 TB HDD with 10.15 to have as an alternate start-up drive in case the drive in my Mac mini should start acting up.

I have searched my Mac mini trying to find the Catalina (10.15) I must have used originally to upgrade my Mac mini.

But I have not been able to find it.

I have read that Command-R can be used to Reinstall macOS from the built-in recovery disk on your computer:

Do you know if this is an option for me, if I can't get the Install to download?

Thanks again for your time.

Feb 11, 2023 4:12 PM in response to D.I. Johnson

I used Command-R and a folder named "macOS Install Data" is now on the External Disk.

But after completing the process, an Error Message stated the the OS could not be installed on the drive.

I don't know if the "drive" referred to was my Primary Drive or the External Drive.

Should I try to launch one of the files (listed below) that were loaded on the External Drive?

If yes, what am I likely to "see" during the install on the External Drive?

I ask because all of the instructions I can find state that the install will put an Install App in the Applications Folder.

But I need the install to occur on the External Drive.

Thanks for your time and assistance.

I tried to use the "Partition" in Disk Utility as you noted.

I immediately received a message that the process Failed.

I tried this several times but it always Failed.

I was able to use the "Erase" in Disk Utility, selecting "APFS" format and "GUID Partition".

It completed the formatting successfully.

I then restarted using ⌘R after shutdown.

The install appears to have never completed.

After several hours the Process Bar was still sitting at the very beginning.

I shutdown the Mac mini and after restarting I found the same type of files as I noted previously.

So, I know the process should work but isn't for me.

I will try using a different external drive and see what happens.

Tangent question:

You said to use "APFS" with 10.10.15.

I noticed that the HDD I use for my Time Machine backups is formatted as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".

Should it be formatted as "APFS" or "APFS (Encrypted)"?

Also, do you know where I can find an explanation the the various formats and when to use them?

In example, what does "Case Sensitive" mean?

Thanks again.

Feb 12, 2023 7:58 AM in response to FrankPerry

The format of your Time Machine back up drive is correct. If it were not then TM would not work.

The process of installing the OS to the external drive should take no longer than 30-45 minutes, or so. Not sure what the problem is there.

If you’re going to try another external drive, then I would suggest an SSD if for no other reason than it would typically be faster. Also, APFS really loves to be installed on an ssd rather than hdd.

Feb 12, 2023 8:54 AM in response to D.I. Johnson

I previously replaced the Mac mini's 1TB HDD with a 2 TB SSD.

The external drive I was trying to reinstall 10.15 on is the old 1 TB HDD, just to have on hand.

I can access the old 1 TB HDD (APFS / GUID) as an external drive and storage files on it.

So, I assume the HDD is "working".

But, if the old HDD is "going bad", would that prevent installing 10.15 but still allow files to be various added?

On another note, I get an error message when I connect my iPhone SE Gen 3 to the Mac mini to back it up.

The message states that the OS must be updated to connect / work (my words) to the iPhone SE.

But the Mac mini can't / won't complete "any" automatic or manual commands to updated to the OS on the Mac mini. If I ignore the message, I am able to connect / manage the iPhone SE, without any obvious issues.

Do you think these issues (can't load OS on the old HDD (external) & can't / won't update beyond 10.15.7) could be caused by something else in the Mac mini?

It is a 2012 and so is pretty old.

I am hoping to get another year out of the Mac mini.

I'm waiting to see if Apple offers a M2 (or M3) iMac in 2023.

Many thanks.

Yes, it is possible that 1TB hdd is working and failing, potentially causing miscellaneous bad behavior.

Many wise users in the Communities recommend DriveDX if you're looking for additional drive diagnostics.

As for the iPhone vs mini...

from time to time a Mac will pop up a software update notification when an iPhone is connected. That's usually just a quick patch to the Mac's iTunes (i think) software and should be accepted on the spot. Not sure what happens when that is ignored.

That notification is nothing to do the normal updates installed when you select System Preferences > Software Update. When you do a manual/automatic update to the mini, if no updates are offered, then no updates are available.

As long as you keep your devices updated and with current software, you shouldn't be too worried

I doubt all this is rooted in some hardware failure other than perhaps the old hdd, but that's not out of the question.
