Can I install MacOS from the dmg installer in an external drive?

I dowloaded the DMG installer for MacOS Ventura, to an external HDD.

If I try tu run it from that HDD the application fails.

It seems the only way it will work is by copying the DMG to the internal SSD-

Notice I did not create a bootable installer.

Is it supposed to work from the external drive?

Apple does not release the macOS Ventura installer as a .dmg download. Here is the only official way to download the macOS 13.x Ventura installer while booted from a Qualifying Mac (that is one which is compatible with Ventura):

How to download macOS - Apple Support

The only macOS installers Apple provides in .dmg downloads are the older macOS installers 10.12 and earlier (or system update patches for macOS 10.15 and earlier).

The only other way macOS Ventura is in a .dmg file is if you downloaded the installer from Apple and manually created a .dmg archive containing the installer.

Otherwise, you downloaded Ventura from an unauthorized third party. This software could be damaged or even worse contain malware. Use at your own risk. Plus you will not get any assistance for using it here on these forums since we have no idea what that file contains.

And obviously if you were an Admin you need a DMG. So it'db silly not to have one. It has been provided since ever.

AFAIK, the information I presented is correct. Apple only provides .dmg downloads of the older macOS 10.12 and earlier installers only. Any links to the App Store will result in the installer application bundle (.app) being downloaded to the Applications folder like any other app downloaded (aka installed) from the App Store. An Admin is only able to use what Apple provides. Also, Apple only recently began providing 10.12 and earlier macOS installers in .dmg format from outside the App Store (maybe 5 years or so? I don't recall exactly).
