My av adapter doesn’t work with my iPad 6. Do I have to manually download this firmware? If so how?

Thanks. I’m impatient. It took a while as I’m offshore and the internet is slow but it finally started working.
Presumably you refer to an Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter?

Firmware updates should install automatically - and should not be interrupted during the installation process.
While connected to your iPad, the Digital AV Adapter’s installed firmware version can be verified from iPad settings:
Settings > General > About > Apple Digital AV Adapter
