Iphone 8 Apple Lightening to Headphone jack adaptor not working

I have purchased 3 of these over the last months and continue to have the same issues i.e.

the sound comes out of the phone speaker rather than the headphones more often than not. Occasionally the latest adaptor will work but has to be inserted with one particular side always orientated upwards! Strange but true.

I have checked my iphone and headphones for faults by connecting the adaptor to another iphone and using other headphones and the fault occurs exactly the same so it seems like the adaptor is the problem.

I have cleaned ports, done hard and soft resets, turned blue tooth off and "forget these headphones" in the sound settings but just cant seem to find a solution.

Unfortunately I find the Apple earphones very uncomfortable so want to continue using my alternative ones which of course do not have a lightening connection meaning I need to use an adaptor.

Any ideas please?

Since you are having issues with your Lightning accessory, start by ensuring that you are using a certified accessory: Identify counterfeit or uncertified Lightning connector accessories - Apple Support

To start, create a current backup to ensure your data remains secure: How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Then, use the following steps to update your iOS:

"Update your iPhone or iPad wirelessly

1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.

2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.

3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.

4. If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.

5.Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now." Update your iPhone or iPad

Thank you for your help. I did all the checks/steps suggested and although its not perfect I can now get round the issue by using "forget these earphones" when the fault occurs so my earphones are at least useable.
