Hi John Mosby,
We'll be glad to look into this with you further. Luckily, Apple has an article for this exact scenario. It will show you what to do if you're unable to see your device in the sidebar after connecting: If your device doesn’t appear in the sidebar when connected to Mac - Apple Support
"Set Finder settings to show your device in the sidebar
- Connect your device to your Mac.
- You can connect your device using a USB or USB-C cable or using a Wi-Fi connection. See Sync content between your Mac and iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch over Wi-Fi.
- In the Finder
on your Mac, choose Finder > Settings. - Click Sidebar.
- Below Locations, select the CDs, DVDs, and iOS Devices checkbox.
- Check the sidebar again, below Locations, to see if your device is showing.

- Click the device to see the syncing options.
If your device still doesn’t appear in the sidebar, see the Apple Support article If your computer doesn’t recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod."
We hope this helps you out.
Cheers.
