Why can’t I see the caller’s face when in a FaceTime call? I only see my face and their initials. They can see my face and theirs.

Wondering if your video / camera is turned off.
There would be a button that looks like a camera. A red-line through means it is "off".
You can click the button to turn "on" / turn "off "

Says ... Eg:
"When you’re on a FaceTime call, tap the screen to make the controls appear,
then tap 
. (Tap it again to turn the camera back on.)"
Else: You generally need a strong wi-fi connection for FaceTime .. if the signal isn't strong you may need to just use audio only, as is happening.
