Why can’t I see the caller’s face when in a FaceTime call? I only see my face and their initials. They can see my face and theirs.

Wondering if your video / camera is turned off.
There would be a button that looks like a camera. A red-line through means it is "off".
You can click the button to turn "on" / turn "off "

Says ... Eg:
"When you’re on a FaceTime call, tap the screen to make the controls appear,
then tap . (Tap it again to turn the camera back on.)"
Else: You generally need a strong wi-fi connection for FaceTime .. if the signal isn't strong you may need to just use audio only, as is happening.
(You can try using Cellular ... (may incur charges though) see the article below:
