I'm supposed to have 1TB of storage on my new iMac 24" but it's filled up with only 200+GB of files. What's the problem please?

Seems the iMac was a 250GB model after all. So I now have a 1TB external Drive to use for data storage. I need to discuss this with the sales rep. Thanks!!
