MBA M2 and iPhone XR bluetooth paring issue

To start with both my MBA and iPhone have the latest software installed. I'm trying to pair these two devices but any attempt to do so displays the message; Pairing Unsuccessful "MacBook Air" is not supported. Not supported? Really?

I've turned off and on BT on both devices and I've shut down and restarted both but the results are the same - not able to pair. My phone can pair with several devices I own such as a 2015 MacBook Pro and other iPhones but not the M2 Air. Strange but seemingly true.
