Creating USB Boot Disk to install Windows 10

I'm trying to create a boot disk to install Windows 10. I'm using a Mac Mini 2014 running OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 and a USB drive with 128GB space.

The instructions I'm following are Install Windows on your older Mac using Boot Camp - Apple Support

I've downloaded Windows 10 ISO from https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10ISO

As part of setting this up, I erased the disk, and formatted to MS -DOS (FAT) and selected Master Boot Record.

The next step is running Bootcamp, i selected

  • Create a Windows 7 or later version install disk, and
  • Install Windows 7 or later version

I run Bootcamp but an error shows up, "Your bootable USB drive could not be created. There is not enough space available on the disk." The USB contains more than enough space to handle an 8GB file.

I feel like I've checked every step here, can someone point me in the right direction?

Unfortunately Apple changed their BootCamp documentation recently and it appears to be a bit disjointed and confusing. Clicking various links in the BootCamp article you linked shows that a 2014 MBPro with El Capitan should be able to install Windows 10 without using a USB stick by following the instructions in this Apple article (acquired the link from within the article you linked):

Install Windows on your newer Mac using Boot Camp - Apple Support

Older Mac computers require an external USB drive to install Windows on your Mac. To find out whether you have a Mac that requires an external USB, see “Learn more” in the Apple Support article How to install Windows on your Mac with Boot Camp

If you have one of these Intel-based Mac models using OS X El Capitan or later, you don't need a USB flash drive to install Windows:
MacBook introduced in 2015 or later
MacBook Air introduced in 2017 or later3
MacBook Pro introduced in 2015 or later3
iMac introduced in 2015 or later
iMac Pro (all models)
Mac Pro introduced in late 2013 or later
