Ventura 13.2.1 broke file sharing and related issues

After installing 13.2.1 file sharing stopped working on my iMac. Tried turning off/on with a reboot but does not work. Even worse, when turning off File Sharing, the Sharing pref panel becomes unresponsive and the Restart and Shut Down commands do not work. Have to do a hard shut down with the button.

After experimenting I see two bugs connected to File Sharing.

1) Ventura 13.2.1 does not properly handle extended attributes on a shared directory.

2) Macs connecting to a directory with extended attributes shared by Ventura 13.2.1 eventually hang and need to be force-restarted.

As soon as there are extended attributes present on the directory to be shared by Ventura 13.2.1, File Sharing stops working. The connecting Mac (does not need to run Ventura as well, also tested with macOS 12) hangs itself up in an I/O deadlock and unless its network connection is stopped, it will need a forced restart.

Examples:

After adding "Comments" using "Get info" the extended attribute "com.apple.metadata:kMDItemFinderComment" and the connecting machine can connect but hangs after a while. The hangup can be triggered by trying to "Get info" on the mounted share.

After adding a Tag using "Get info" the extended attribute "com.apple.metadata:_kMDItemUserTags: is added. Now I can no longer connect, the share is listed but the connecting machine hangs trying to connect. On the machine serving the share I can not even turn off File Sharing, the Sharing preference does not even load. I could load it again after force killing smbd using sudo kill -9.

After adding a custom icon the extended attribute "com.apple.FinderInfo" appears and kills File Sharing in much the same way.

After clearing all extended attributes using xattr -c, sharing works again.

First and foremost, I think what ever happens on a network it should never ever deadlock the file system of any machine ever. Filesystem lockups should never happen. Ever. This is a bad bug imho, regardless of the bug in the Ventura machine serving the share.

Secondly, I do hope that Apple is aware of this issue. The issue is still present in Ventura 13.3 public betas 1 and 2.

Hey mr. apple specialist. I know this isn't the topic, but could be closely related since file sharing and firewall is working in tandem. I am trying to get this noticed since it's a massive security concern if it pans out as I lay it out...the issue is not getting recognised as it should right now. Would really appreciate a bump for this issue since people are going to freak out when they find out that Ventura is messing with firewall settings (again, if it's no malware doing that).

Same Problems as everyone else. Its not just me or us. Cant connect to certain machines certain peripherals, and all you get is turn it on and of, turn on and off file sharing.... Never changed, nothing changes. After your "security update" all my networks are broken. Spent an entire day on phone with tech support - first 5 "don't worry we will help you..." they didnt... they pass you around to nowhere do the same steps as the first 4 techs and then say.... "Keep an eye out for update..." WHERE IS THE FIX???? Con Artists & Thieves

gk254, Glad that this fix worked for you and others. Would like to try as well. Would you mind being a little more detailed for the non-techies.

I have an iMac and a MBP. Both are 13.2.1 which broke sharing. The iMac actually can load the MBP for sharing (at least short term) but the MBP freezes when trying to access the iMac. I do need this 2 way sharing. Any advice appreciate.

Thanks

Ken

Having the same issue. None of the "solutions" suggested, fix it permanently. The "turn off File Sharing, reboot, turn on File Sharing" solution, mostly never works. I've had it resolve the issue a couple of times (for a short period), but more often than not it doesn't resolve anything. I can't actually work properly if I don't have access to my shared files/folders. This issue is incredibly frustrating!! ☹️

I do appreciate Apple sending me/us updates on how very specific non-related issues that are being presented as solutions here. I've already deleted everything multiple times, I've turned on and off so many computers so many time file sharing on and off over and over, read the emails try the new "fix" nothing but spin, spin, spin. Sorry its there we can see but yeah we dont recognize... sorry try again lol.. Its been too long without a real fix from them (apple) You broke it! Patch/update, admit, move on- Im sick of working around not being able to access information on other computers within feet of each other. Its one of the few things that define what a computer is and should do. Transfer and sharing of information.... Its kind of the point. Safety and security was the reason for the update, and you nullified the point of owning your product... Its long enough own up and fix it.
