I can't make calls from my mac but I can receive them.

Alpe31 asked this question and it expired. There was one response with what to have turned on on each device. I have checked all of those settings and I still have the same problem:

I can't make calls from my mac but I can receive them.

I am on a mid-2014 15" Macbook Pro running El Capitan 10.11.6

I also have a newer Macbook that has no problem making or receiving calls.

Any thoughts?

Hi Mug,

The next step you can try is signing out of FaceTime and signing back in.

  1. Open FaceTime
  2. Tap the FaceTime menu > Settings
  3. Click Sign out

Once signed out, sign back into your Mac and confirm this continues.

Check out some additional steps you can take here: If you can't sign in to your iMessage account or FaceTime on your Mac - Apple Support.

Take Care!

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities Mug,

In order to make and receive calls on your Mac, you'll need to make sure you meet each of the requirements, and set up the feature. The following information should help:

With the iPhone Cellular Calls feature, you can make and receive phone calls from your Mac or iPad when those devices are on the same network as your iPhone.

Set up iPhone Cellular Calls

Make sure that your Mac, iPhone, and iPad meet the Continuity system requirements.

Your devices must also be near each other and set up as follows:

• Each device is signed in with the same Apple ID.
• Each device is signed in to FaceTime with the same Apple ID.
• Each device has Wi-Fi turned on.
• Each device is connected to the same network using Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
• On your iPhone, go to Settings > Phone > Calls on Other Devices, then turn on Allow Calls on Other Devices.
• On your iPad, go to Settings > FaceTime > Calls from iPhone, then turn on Calls from iPhone.
• On your Mac, open the FaceTime app, choose FaceTime > Settings (or Preferences), then select Calls From iPhone.

If your carrier supports Wi-Fi calling on other devices, you can set up those devices to make and receive calls even when your iPhone isn't turned on or nearby. Learn about Wi-Fi calling.

Make and receive phone calls

After setting up your devices, you can make and receive phone calls on your Mac or iPad whenever the iPhone is nearby and on the same network as the other device.

• The steps to make a call vary with the app you're using. In most cases you can simply tap, click, or Control-click the phone number that you see in your app. Then tap or click a phone button the audio call icon, or choose a call option from a menu. You can also make a call directly from the FaceTime app. Learn more about how to make and receive phone calls on Mac.
• To answer a call, use the notification that appears on your Mac or iPad when someone calls your iPhone. You can answer the call, send it to voicemail, or send the caller a message.

To stop getting calls on one of your devices, just turn off the Calls from iPhone setting on that device. See the setup section above for details.

We hope this helps!

Mug,

Let's do this next then -

  1. Quit FaceTime on your Mac
  2. On your iPhone go to Settings > Phone > Calls on Other Devices
  3. Disable your MacBook Pro that is having the issue
  4. Restart both your iPhone and MacBook Pro
  5. Enable your Mac on your iPhone again in Settings > Phone > Calls on Other Devices
  6. Test

Then let us know if there is any change.

Thanks.

Thank you for your reply mikeg28806,

I checked all of the settings on my Mac and my iPhone that are referenced above. All are set correctly, including the "handoff" setting. Still can only receive calls, and calls initiated on my Mac, say "call failed" right away. One of the pages the above links sent me to said 2012 & later Macbook Pros using Yosemite of later were needed for using "handoff".

I'm using a mid-2014 15" Macbook Pro running El Capitan 10.11.6

(I need to stay with El Capitan on this computer for work reasons)

Any other ideas?

I can't make calls from my mac but I can receive them.
