Mac Contacts extremely slow — Spinning Wheel

When editing a contact, oftentimes the spinning wheel pops up from 30 seconds to a minute while editing a field. And this can happen for each field (First, Last, Company, Email, Phone, etc.). Creating and/or editing a contact, which shouldn't take more than 10 to 30 seconds, can take 1 to 5 minutes. I'm more than happy to replicate this problem with an Apple technician over Zoom shared screen.

Contacts is such a fundamental and basic application for the Mac that it's mind-boggling that Apple, with all its experience and resource, hasn't been able to resolve this issue. Please, please, please resolve this issue.

Thank you.

Yep. iCloud seems to be the culprit. I went into settings and unchecked the enable box for iCloud and Contacts stopped freezing. So Apple...any plans to fix this?

Adding New Contact issue

Well we can guess who the un-named non iCloud Source could be.

1 - Suggest Disconnect from the Internet Completely and then add the info to Contacts. Then re-connect to internet

OR >>

2 - Uncheck Contacts from Syncing to the Third Party Source. Add the info and pause. Re-enable the Sync to the Third Party Source

Hi cyba99,

We appreciate you reaching out to us.

We’d like to gather additional details that may help us be in a better position to assist you.

  1. Does it help if you restart your MacBook Pro? Shut down or restart your Mac - Apple Support
  2. Are you using iCloud to sync your contacts?
  3. Are you experiencing performance-related issues when using other apps or features?

In the meantime, let’s test if the issue persists on a newly created user account.

  1. "On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Users & Groups  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
  2. Click the Add Account button below the list of users on the right (you may be asked to enter your password.)
  3. Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose a type of user.
  4. Enter a full name for the new user. An account name is generated automatically. To use a different account name, enter it now—you can’t change it later.
  5. Enter a password for the user, then enter it again to verify. Enter a password hint to help the user remember their password.
  6. Click Create User."

If you are experiencing the issue when signed in on a different user account, please check if the issue persists while on safe mode.

Safe mode does a basic check of your startup disk, similar to using First Aid in Disk Utility.

Performing this step may help resolve the issue, or further isolate the issue.

Below is an article to help guide you through the process.

If you haven't, it may also help if you update your MacBook Pro.
