virtual keyboard icons

My 6th generation ipad virtual keyboard never ever has any formatting icons at the top - no undo, Aa, table, markup,…. Why? I have been doing tutorials on notes and freeform and really wish I could access those menus as in the tutorials. It is always kept up to date and is on ios 16.3

Hi pfjrichards,

To help isolate the behavior, see if the issue is specific to the keyboard that is being used. To test with a different keyboard, touch and hold the Emoji key, as outlined here:

Add or change keyboards on iPad - Apple Support

Switch to another keyboard
• On the onscreen keyboard: Touch and hold the Next Keyboard, Emoji key or the Switch Keyboard key, then tap the name of the keyboard you want to switch to.
You can also tap the Next Keyboard, Emoji key or the Switch Keyboard key to switch from one keyboard to another. Continue tapping to access other enabled keyboards.

If the issue persists, then test after restarting your iPad, and after updating to iPadOS 16.3.1, as taking these steps can clear up unexpected behavior:

Update your iPhone or iPad wirelessly
1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
4. If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.

Kind regards.

Hello pfjrichards,

Welcome back to Apple Support Communities!

We want to make sure the software is working perfectly for you.

We’ll need to learn more about this to help isolate and resolve the issue. To confirm, are you not seeing the text boxes at all on the keyboard?

Check here to see if predictive text is turned on:

"To turn predictive text off or on:

Touch and hold the smile emoji  or the globe icon .

Tap Keyboard Settings, then turn Predictive on or off.

Or go to Settings > General > Keyboard, and turn Predictive on or off."

This Apple Support page has the full details: How to use Auto-Correction and predictive text on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

We hope this helps to get predictive text showing on your keyboard.

Or if this still isn't the issue, please provide more details so we can better assist.

Cheers!

Good afternoon pfjrichards,

Do you have an external Bluetooth keyboard that you can pair and test with your iPad? Do you see different toolbars and icons offered when you open an app like Pages using an external keyboard?

I have the predictive text (thankfully) but nothing else. I could take more pictures but my keyboard is as in the picture above in all apps-whether messages, email, pages, notes or freeform. It never had any formating icons in the upper corners. I have been doing tutorials on notes and freeform (which I have never used) and In the tutorials all the keyboards look like this. Which is different than Tom’s above but maybe thats because he is in pages?
